Mildred "Mit" Joyner

Mildred "Mit" Joyner is a champion for social and economic justice. Throughout her professional career the thread of 'equality and justice for all' was her core mission. This was not only exemplified in her leadership, but in her teaching, scholarship, and service. Mit received her BSW from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio and her MSW from Howard University, School of Social Work in Washington, D.C. After beginning her career in child welfare, Mit embraced a teaching opportunity in higher education with the undergraduate social work department at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. In 1981, she was elected to be the director/chairperson of the department. She served in this leadership role and taught social work courses for over 29 years. As director, Mit was the catalyst behind the development of the MSW Program, the first accredited MSW program in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. In 2010, she chaired the fundraising committee for the Frederick Douglass sculpture which is permanently located on the campus of West Chester University.

Currently, Mit Joyner serves as the Vice President of the National Association of Social Workers in Washington, DC. She is the immediate past President and Board Chair of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and, in that capacity, she concurrently served on the board of the International Association for Schools of Social Work (IASSW). She received numerous professional accolades, including most recently, the 2017 CSWE Lifetime Service and Leadership Award.

Mit has co-authored three books: Critical Multiculturalism and Intersectionality in a Complex World, (2nd edition, July 2018); Critical Multicultural Social Work (2008), and The Caregivers for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS in Kenya: An Ecological Perspective (2011). Today, Mit spends her time as a consultant and a national speaker on topics related to social work education, equity and inclusion, social, economic, and environmental justice.
