The SATS social worker, an independent practice level social worker, functions as one of the social workers for the Medical Center's Substance Abuse Treatment Section (SATS). The Substance Abuse Treatment Section, whose purpose is to promote the development and provision of substance abuse services with the goal of helping substance abusing veterans achieve abstinence from substances of abuse or modify patterns of use through harm reduction, exists within the continuum of behavioral health care for veterans at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC and for veterans served by Community-based Outpatient Clinics. As an independent practitioner of social work, the GS-11 SATS Social Worker evaluates psychosocial needs and applies social work interventions with a high degree of autonomy, exercising independent judgment and initiative in carrying out social work functions and in applying social work values and ethics to complex situations.

 

The SATS Social Worker may serve as a veteran's Primary Mental Health Provider, while also providing case management services (directly or through referral) to the veteran to ensure that care is coordinated with the VA medical center, community health or mental health providers, and agencies that serve substance abuse populations.

 

In conjunction with the SATS interdisciplinary treatment team, the veteran's family members and significant others, the SATS social worker screens eligible veterans for SATS services and completes/updates a psychosocial assessment within 15 days of the veteran's admission to the program, per Medical Center policy. The SATS social worker will work with the veteran to gather and evaluate information pertinent to treatment planning and goal setting, and with the veteran's consent, the SATS social worker will gather and evaluate information from collateral sources. The goal of the assessment process is to not only gather the data from these sources, but to appropriately analyze the information to assist the veteran in identifying strengths and perceived barriers, internal/external supports and overall service needs to optimize the veteran's functional status.

 

The SATS social worker works closely with the veteran to develop a mutually agreed upon treatment plan, which builds on the analysis of information gathered in the assessment and the strengths and perceived barriers identified by the veteran. The SATS social worker will work with the veteran to develop goals and objectives that are specific, measurable, realistic, and time limited. The plan will be written in a way to ensure the coordination of services provided by the SATS Social Worker. The plan will be completed within 15 days of admission to the program and updated monthly, unless otherwise dictated by changes identified by the veteran and/or the SATS social worker.

 

The SATS social worker will oversee the coordination of services in which the veteran participates, both through VA and community agencies. The SATS social worker may function as the Primary Mental Health Provider for the veteran, overseeing the veteran's care in Psychiatry Service and ensuring that he or she accesses the most appropriate level of treatment in the least restrictive environment. The SATS social worker will educate the veteran, his or her family and appropriate collaterals about all the services and resources available, and will collaborate with the veteran in selecting the most appropriate option.

 

Throughout the course of treatment the SATS social worker has a wide range and developing knowledge of VA and/or community resources. The SATS social worker will collaborate with other service providers in reassessing the veteran's needs. The SATS social worker is responsible for ensuring that other mental health providers and VA staff are educated on the available VA and community substance abuse services/resources, and for assisting the veterans in accessing those services and resources based on the veteran's preference
